This project will identify inhibitors of a new oxygen sensing system to increase blood vessel formation in ischemic cardiovascular disease.

What is the issue for NSW?
Ischemic heart disorders are the leading cause of death and disability in Australia, including NSW. They are characterised by reduced blood perfusion and low oxygen availability, which can cause irreversible tissue damage if unaddressed. Consequently, therapeutic strategies to increase blood vessel formation in affected areas are needed to mitigate this burden on the Australian population.
What does the research aim to do and how?
The project aims to develop chemical inhibitors of a novel oxygen sensing system implicated in angiogenesis, the process of forming new blood vessels. This project also aims to test their function on appropriate animal models of ischemic heart disease with a view to clinical development.
